Isuzu has unveiled the facelifted mid-cycle update of the second-generation MU-X SUV in Thailand. It comes with a wealth of new features, while maintaining the same ladder frame chassis and powertrain choices as its predecessor. The refreshed Isuzu MU-X, which costs THB 1,184,000 (equivalent to Rs 26.90 Lakh), is slated for release in other markets as well. A question for future discussion, however, is whether Isuzu India should consider introducing and updating the first-generation model with this facelift in the domestic market.
In terms of exterior aesthetics, the Isuzu MU-X has a close resemblance to the Isuzu D-Max pick-up. The second-generation model, sold in international markets, now features a stylish RS variant which further elevates the appeal of the ‘Ultimate’ trim. The facelifted SUV boasts of a completely overhauled front design that includes sharper LED headlights and an imposing grill. The bumper intakes sport a rugged design, which infuses the sporty aspect of the stylish MU-X.
Apart from a sturdy cladding and running boards, the side profile is further enhanced by the sporty alloy wheels, blacked-out B and C columns, and body-colour coordinated door handles. The rear has revamped bumpers and revamped, all-new, full-width LED tail lamps. For an added pop of colour, an RS variant is available with special attributes like a chrome-infused grill, front skid plate, intake garnishing and rear bumper extensions. Additionally, 20-inch alloy wheels, a blacked-out fender and roof, along with lime green detailing on the RS emblems and centre caps, add to its distinct visual appeal.
The interior is also revitalised with major improvements such as a seven-inch digital instrument cluster, and an upgraded nine-inch touchscreen infotainment system that supports wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. The seats and door trims have also received a stylish upgrade to improve overall aesthetics. The interior of the RS variant comes with added features like red ambient lighting and black inserts. The ultimate trim level of the Isuzu MU-X facelift includes truffle brown leather upholstery, with complementing inserts.
Isuzu has enhanced its safety package for the MU-X facelift, incorporating several additional ADAS features. Depending upon the chosen variant, the SUV's ADAS kit may include blind spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control, traffic jam assistance, lane keeping assistance and rear cross-traffic brake. The surround view monitor also allows for a look beneath the vehicle's floor, essentially acting as a transparent bonnet view. This is particularly useful for off-road driving scenarios.
The facelift continues to use the same engines as the previous version, including a 1.9-litre turbo diesel producing 148 hp and a 3.0-litre turbo diesel offering 187 hp. Only the top-spec RS variant gets the option for a 4WD system. In Thailand, all variations of the Isuzu MU-X come with a six-speed automatic gearbox.
In terms of pricing, the base model of the Isuzu MU-X facelift is available for THB 1,184,000 (approximately Rs 26.90 lakh) while the high-end 4X4 RS variant is priced at THB 1,759,000 (Rs 39.97 lakh). On the ASEAN markets, the Isuzu MU-X facelift will be seen competing with the likes of Toyota Fortuner, Mitsubishi Pajero Sport, and Ford Everest.
