On July 8, 2024, the premium automotive company, Mercedes-Benz India, will enhance its electric vehicle (EV) lineup with the eagerly awaited launch of the all-new, electric EQA SUV. This launch marks the brand’s entry into the expansive Indian EV market, where it will go head to head with contemporary rivals like the Volvo XC40 Recharge and the BMW iX1.
Presently, Mercedes-Benz India's EV portfolio comprising three models: the EQB seven-seat SUV, EQE SUV, and the flagship EQS sedan. The addition of the EQA model is in line with Mercedes' larger plans of expanding its EV range and targeting a comprehensive lineup of six electric cars by the close of 2024.
The EQA, which was globally unveiled following its facelift in August last year, is the next EV poised to make its Indian debut. Wrapped in a sleek, crossover-like build, contrasting the more conventional architecture of its seven-seater sibling, the EQB, the EQA boasts an array of popular Mercedes design elements.
The exterior design is marked by a front grille panel featuring the distinctive Mercedes star pattern and a unique, full-width light-bar. At the rear, the resemblance to the EQB is replicated, reinforcing brand identity while maintaining unique product characteristics.
Stepping inside, the cabin strikes a balance between classical elegance and futuristic design aesthetics. Accentuating the interior space are intricately patterned dashboard and door trims bathed in gentle backlighting, reminiscent of the trims found in the high-end S-Class and EQS models. Expected standard features for the Indian model include a touch-capacitive three-spoke steering wheel, a digital driver display, a 10.25-inch touchscreen running the latest operating system, and a Burmester surround sound system with Dolby Atmos functionality.
In terms of the powertrain, Mercedes is yet to unveil the specifics of the India-bound EQA. However, globally, the EQA is offered in four variants, each outfitted with a potent set of batteries. These include the EQA 250, EQA 250+, EQA 300 4Matic, and EQA 350 4Matic; minus the 250+ variant, which receives a 70.5 kWh battery promising up to 560 km of range, all other EQA variants draw power from a 66.5 kWh battery pack that has a maximum range of 528 km (under WLTP parameters).
Assuming that Mercedes retains a comparable pricing strategy to its existing EV models, the EQA, considered as Mercedes’ entry-level e-SUV, is expected to slot in slightly below the EQB, currently priced at Rs 77.75 lakh. Furthermore, the Mercedes EQA's primary competition will come from models like the Volvo XC40 Recharge and C40 Recharge (priced between Rs. 54.95 to 62.95 lakh) as well as BMW’s iX1 (priced at Rs. 66.90 lakh). The Kia’s EV6, priced between Rs. 60.97 to 65.97 lakh, could also pose a viable challenge.
As the electric vehicle market continues to evolve in India, the arrival of the Mercedes EQA is sure to stir things up. Keep an eye out on July 8 for the official release, with more updates and developments to follow.
