Japanese automaker Isuzu has recently taken the wraps off its updated MU-X SUV in Thailand. Considered a mid-cycle refresh, the facelift of the sport utility vehicle has introduced sporty design elements, an enhanced turbo diesel engine and advanced driver assistance systems.
Building upon the second-generation model that was introduced worldwide in 2020, the new facelifted Isuzu MU-X retains the robust architecture of its predecessor. It continues to share its platform with the D-Max V-Cross, which is recognised as a highly capable SUV in the market. In its 2024 edition, the MU-X also includes an advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) suite which offers various safety systems, depending on the variant selected.
Design-wise, the facelifted Isuzu MU-X SUV features a larger grille, updated LED headlamps with a sharper look, and a revised full-width taillamp. The front and rear bumpers have also been modified to add a sleek touch to the vehicle. As part of the facelift, Isuzu has also introduced a sporty MU-X RS variant with darker, blacked-out elements like the grille, roof, 20-inch diamond-cut alloys, and fenders. Additional features include a gloss-black finish on the bumper, skid plates, and rear bumper extensions, with centre caps and RS badges accented in a contrasting lime green for a striking visual touch.
In terms of its interiors, the 2024 MU-X scope of safety features are impressive. The vehicle offers adaptive cruise control, blind spot monitoring, traffic jam assist, and lane-keeping assist, supplemented by a rear-cross traffic brake. A surround-view monitor gives owners a 360-degree panorama of the SUV, helpful especially during off-road situations. The vehicle's infotainment system is a revamped 9.0-inch touchscreen, now offering support to wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. A new 7.0-inch digital instrument cluster is featured, while the RS variant also has added red ambient lighting within.
Under the bonnet, the MU-X Facelift hosts two engine options to choose from, both diesel - a 1.9-litre and a 3.0-litre. The power output by the lesser displacement one is of 148 bhp and a torque of 360Nm, whereas its more potent sibling delivers 188 bhp and 450Nm of torque. All this power is transferred to the wheels through a 6-speed automatic transmission, available in either rear-wheel or all-wheel drive options.
The refreshed 2024 Isuzu MU-X is set to go head-to-head with formidable rivals like the Toyota Fortuner, the Ford Endeavour, and the Mitsubishi Pajero Sport in the market. While Isuzu plans to roll out the SUV in more than 60 countries, it is yet to confirm whether it'll be launched in India.
At present, the older generation of the MU-X is available at Rs 37 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi) in the Indian market. Going forward, it will be interesting to see how the updated version is received by users worldwide.
