Despite the growing trend towards electric vehicles, Yamaha has chosen a different path. Instead of rapidly increasing its electric vehicle offerings, Yamaha has decided to concentrate its efforts on producing a uniquely functional electric two-wheeler for the Indian market. Eishin Chihana, chairman of Yamaha Motor India Group of companies, expressed the company's vision for this unique product, as well as its plans for establishing India as a key manufacturer within Yamaha's global business network.
Rather than entering the race to produce mass-market electric two-wheelers, Yamaha is collaborating with teams in Japan and India to develop a unique and promising product for the Indian market. The first of Yamaha's electric two-wheelers in India is poised to carry the brand's signature attributes of style, flair, and speed. To help achieve their electric vehicle ambitions, Yamaha has made a recent investment in River, an electric-vehicle start-up, which specializes in creating and selling electric scooters.
This investment has led to the launch of 'River Mobility', a new subsidiary based in Bengaluru. It's this new venture that will be critical in determining the trajectory of Yamaha’s electric vehicle journey in India. Chihana praises River for its excellence in engineering, a quality he believes is crucial in designing an innovative, high-quality product for the Indian market.
Chihana pointed out that the company's reluctance to dive headfirst into the electric vehicle race is because most Yamaha customers currently favor petrol motorcycles. Yamaha motorcycles generally appeal to the Gen Z age group of 18 to 25-year-olds, and Chihana stated that emotional appeal plays a large role for this demographic. As such, these considerations need to be carefully addressed in the design of Yamaha's upcoming electric two-wheeler.
Looking towards the future, the company will maintain its focus on its Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) portfolio. According to the company's estimates, by 2030 ICE two-wheeler sales are projected to make up approximately 70-80% of total two-wheeler sales. Yamaha anticipates that their primary consumer base will gravitate towards higher-capacity ICE motorcycles capable of covering long distances. This contrasts with electric scooters, which tend to be more suited to shorter, urban commutes.
Yamaha also aims to elevate India's position as a key manufacturing hub. This includes increasing exports from India, and structuring India as a critical support pillar to Indonesia within the company's global business. Presently, Yamaha India ranks fourth in profitability, trailing behind the US, Europe, and Indonesia. However, by decade's end, Yamaha India's ranking is projected to improve in both sales volumes and profitability.
Under Yamaha's upcoming 2025-27 three-year midterm plan, there's an increased emphasis on the electric sector. Additionally, countries like India are expected to play a more significant role. At present, Yamaha's focus is centered around expanding premium bike sales to the growing middle class in countries like India, Indonesia, and the Philippines. Similarly, the expansion of the Blue Square retail stores throughout India is seen as a priority.
It won't be easy to reintroduce the RX100, however. The beloved motorcycle has a significant fan base but re-imagining it to fit within the modern era's age of 4-stroke motorcycles presents a considerable challenge. To match the original RX100's performance and acceleration, the engine would need to be at least 200cc up from the original's 100cc. Successfully emulating the RX100's distinct exhaust note will also be an obstacle. Nevertheless, Chihana maintains a keen interest in reviving the esteemed RX100 model and is actively in search of possible solutions.
