Skoda Auto India has recently introduced the automatic Skoda Kushaq Onyx 1.0 TSI AT model at a competitive price of Rs 13.49 lakh, expanding its best-selling SUV lineup. This new variant emerges as the finest budget-friendly automatic option, promising significant value for car enthusiasts in India - one of the biggest and most intense compact SUV markets.
The Skoda Kushaq is recognized for being an excellent competitor in the compact SUV section and has seen multiple fresh updates and editions to keep the product dynamic. Skoda has consistently worked on providing more value in its Kushaq models, and this new variant is a manifestation of that strategy. The feature-loaded automatic variant of the Skoda Kushaq Onyx is undoubtedly a wonderful addition to the lineup.
Rewind back to March 2023, Skoda launched the Onyx Edition of Kushaq, wedging it between the basic Active and Ambition trims. This edition was originally designed with visually striking graphics and decals, which were later edited out, resulting in a cleaner and sleeker look for the SUV. Initially, the Onyx Edition only utilized a 1.0L TSI engine paired with a 6-speed manual gearbox. However, by June 2024, the company added a 6-speed torque converter automatic gearbox option for the Onyx trim, also introducing paddle shifters.
Previously, the Skoda Skoda Kushaq Onyx 1.0 TSI Onyx model could only be paired with a manual gearbox. But with the introduction of the automatic variant, it has become the top choice for customers looking for both performance and convenience. Priced at Rs. 13.49 lakh, the Skoda Kushaq Onyx 1.0 TSI AT variant also becomes more affordable than the previous least expensive automatic variant - the Ambition 1.0 TSI AT priced at Rs 15.84 lakh.
The Onyx Edition comes packed with a cornucopia of features including Tecton wheel covers, Crystalline LED headlights with incorporated daytime running lights, and an automatic climate control system referred to as “Climatronic” by Skoda. Certain exclusive features for the Onyx Edition include premium textile mats with an Onyx badge, Scuff plates with Onyx imprint, and an Onyx badge on the vehicle’s B-Pillars.
In terms of safety, the Skoda Kushaq continues its legacy of maintaining high security standards. Kushaq has also been lauded with a 5 Star crash rating from Global NCAP and includes features such as electronic stability control, ABS with EBD, multi-collision braking, hill hold control, traction control system, brake disc wiping, rollover protection, airbags on the front, side and curtains, tyre pressure monitoring system, anti-theft alarm, and rear parking camera and sensors for increased passenger safety.
Under the hood, the engine of the Skoda Kushaq Onyx 1.0 TSI AT remains unaltered. The 1.0-litre TSI petrol engine delivers 115 PS of maximum power and 178 Nm of peak torque. It now adds a 6-speed AT to the already offering 6-speed MT. The more powerful 1.5-litre TSI petrol engine which generates 150 PS and 250 Nm with either a 6-speed MT or 7-speed DSG is restrictive to higher trims and does not feature on the Onyx edition.
In a public statement, Petr Janeba, the Brand Director of Škoda Auto India, noted that the Onyx variant significantly bolsters their lineup by amalgamating the value of the Active trim with features from the higher variants. He further added, “This new Kushaq Onyx offering is in response to feedback from our customers, which points to a healthy demand for an automatic variant at a more accessible price point. Offering a hassle-free ownership experience, getting closer to our customers, and constantly listening to our customers is our endeavour, and a key part of our growth strategy.”
In a strategic move to broaden its global footprint, Skoda Auto, in collaboration with Thanh Cong Group, has inaugurated a new manufacturing facility in Quang Ninh province, Vietnam. This plant is set to locally assemble the Skoda Kushaq SUV and Skoda Slavia sedan using Completely Knocked Down (CKD) kits imported from Skoda's logistics hub in Pune, India
Production Timeline and Model Portfolio
The series production of the Kushaq commenced on March 26, 2025, marking a significant milestone in Skoda's expansion into the Vietnamese market. The Slavia sedan is scheduled to begin production later this summer. These models will complement Skoda's existing lineup in Vietnam, which includes the Karoq and Kodiaq SUVs imported from Europe
State-of-the-Art Manufacturing Facility
The newly established plant is equipped with advanced technology, featuring a welding shop, paint shop, and final assembly line. To ensure adherence to global quality standards, the facility also houses a 2-kilometer test track, a precision measurement center, and a quality control hub. Its proximity to Haiphong Port, one of Vietnam's largest and most modern ports, facilitates efficient importation of CKD kits from India.
Leadership Insights
Klaus Zellmer, CEO of Skoda Auto, emphasized the significance of this development, stating, "Opening this new assembly line marks a milestone in our expansion into the rapidly growing Vietnamese market and strengthens our position in the ASEAN region." He highlighted the strategic synergy with the Indian market as a foundation for success for both Skoda and its local partner, Thanh Cong Group
Andreas Dick, Board Member for Production and Logistics at Skoda Auto, noted that the facility reflects Skoda's high manufacturing standards and underscored the importance of its location near Haiphong Port for swift CKD kit deliveries from Pune, India
Local Adaptation and Testing
Prior to production, the Kushaq underwent extensive testing on Vietnamese roads, covering over 330,000 kilometers. These tests included exposure to extreme temperatures ranging from -10°C to +42°C in high humidity conditions to ensure the vehicle's reliability in local climates. Both the Kushaq and Slavia are left-hand-drive models tailored for Vietnamese consumers, equipped with features such as adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, and synthetic leather upholstery
Expansion Plans in Vietnam
Skoda's entry into Vietnam in September 2023 marked the beginning of its broader ASEAN strategy. The company has already established 15 sales outlets across the country and plans to expand this network to 32 dealerships by the end of 2025. Additionally, Skoda introduced its Experience Centre showroom format in Hanoi, enhancing customer engagement and brand presence in the region.
This initiative underscores Skoda's commitment to leveraging its Indian operations to fuel international growth, particularly in the Southeast Asian markets. By utilizing CKD kits from India, Skoda aims to replicate its success in the Indian market, where models like the Kushaq and Slavia have significantly contributed to sales growth.
