The fifth-generation Mini Cooper S, a renowned petrol-powered model, is primed to make its grand return to the Indian market. Retaining its iconic shape but with an evolved design and modernized interior, this model welcomes the return of petrol-powered Minis to India. The booking for this dynamic offering from Mini has begun, although the pricing details will be disclosed later.
This 2024 edition Mini Cooper still embraces its classic form. However, it flaunts a refreshed, sleeker design along with a new octagonal front grille adorned with detailed design elements. The modern touch doesn't stop there; the car comes with round LED headlights with customizable DRL light patterns.
The side presents newly designed 17-inch alloy wheels, which can be elevated to 18-inch units based on personal preference. At the back, you'll notice redesigned LED taillights sporting a unique sequential indicator and the classic Union Jack motif. Customers will have the option to choose from five colour schemes for the Mini Cooper S, including Ocean Wave Green, Sunny Side Yellow, British Racing Green, Chill Red II, and Blazing Blue.
Moving inside, the new Mini Cooper retains its signature circular theme while incorporating a minimalist design. The spotlight feature is the 9.4-inch round OLED touchscreen, replacing the traditional instrument cluster. All necessary car information is displayed on this central screen.
A tastefully designed toggle bar unit houses the parking brake, gear selector, start/stop key, experience mode toggle, and volume control on the centre console. The traditional placement of the gear lever now boasts a wireless charging tray. A panoramic glass roof enhances the feel of the cabin, accompanied by rear seats fitted with a 60:40 split function to expand the trunk space from 210 to 725 litres.
Amongst the extensive list of features, the Mini Cooper S rolls out with a heads-up display, electrically adjustable front seats, massage function for the driver's seat, ambient lighting, an electrochromic inside rearview mirror, auto AC, and connected car tech.
Under the hood, the new Mini Cooper S houses a 2-litre four-cylinder turbo-petrol engine. It pushes out 204 PS and 300 Nm, which is an improvement from the current model. The car clocks a 0-100 kmph time of 6.6 seconds, powered by a 7-speed DCT (dual-clutch automatic transmission) driving the front wheels.
When it comes to safety, the new Mini Cooper S is equipped with six airbags, ABS with brake assist, Level-1 advanced driver’s assistance system (ADAS), traction control, dynamic stability control, and an electronic parking brake. It also includes a pedestrian warning system as standard, with a blind spot warning system available as an option.
While the new Mini Cooper's pricing is yet to be officially announced, the existing Mini Cooper S three-door range starts at Rs 42.7 lakh (ex-showroom). Given the added tech features and upgrades, the new model is likely to be priced higher. Even though it doesn't have direct competition, it can be an alternative to models like BMW X1, Mercedes-Benz GLA, and Audi Q3.
