KTM recently announced a teaser trailer for its newest ADV motorcycle, featuring an Automated Manual Transmission (AMT) gearbox. This new addition to the ADV line stands out from previous models with its inclusion of a foot-operated gear selector and handlebar shifters. However, notably absent from this model’s design is the common clutch lever found in most traditional ADV motorcycles.
The ADV prototype showcased in the teaser video recently took part in the prestigious Iron Road Prologue category during Redbull’s Erzberg Rodeo held in Eisenerz, Austria. Limited to only twin-cylinder motorcycles, this racing category was the perfect opportunity to show off the prototype's off-road capabilities. The professional French enduro rider, Johnny Aubert, skillfully demonstrated the superior off-road and terrain handling of the prototype during the event.
Even the motorcycle's camouflage branding: KTM, AMT and Prototype, emphasize exactly what it brings to the two-wheeler market. With an increasing industry trend towards semi-automatic motorcycles, the prototype joins the ranks of recent models, including Honda Africa Twin DCT and Goldwing DCT, which have ushered in an era of automatic gearboxes in motorbikes.
The prototype works via a clutchless operation allowing the rider the choice of either shifting by foot or from the handlebar. Another unique feature is an auto mode for those not keen on shifting gears manually, thus eliminating the need for gear shifts and clutches. It will potentially have a slight learning curve for current riders, but seems to offer a more smooth and simplified riding experience.
This new riding technology is particularly favored among ADV and large bagger bikes. Their heavy-duty nature often sees them utilized on long continental rides, where the simplicity of an automatic transmission can offer increased comfort and convenience. This also enables riders to focus solely on challenging off-road terrains, rather than constantly adjusting gears.
In India, KTM is meanwhile focusing on testing its soon to be released 390 platform motorcycles, which include the 390 Adventure and 390 Enduro. The company is also working on the development of a new RC 390 slated for potential release in the Indian market.
From the BMW Motorrad's ASA technology for the R 1300 GS ADV to the recently teased KTM 1390 Super Adventure, the motorbike industry is experiencing noteworthy shifts towards automated technology that enhances rider's experiences. As motorcycle manufacturers embrace this innovation, the future of automatic transmission in motorcycles is already upon us.
