From April 1st, with the introduction of a new initiative called the Electric Mobility Promotion Scheme (EMPS) by the Indian Government, almost all manufacturers of electric two-wheelers have consequently revised their prices. This scheme, as well as the removal of the FAME subsidy, is primarily behind the substantial increase in cost.
Ather Energy, for example, has drastically increased its 450 range prices, the most affordable of which is the 450S, seeing a price surge of Rs 16,000. The 2.9kWh variant of the more premium 450X has experienced a modest Rs 3,000 bump in price, while the premium 450X 3.7kWh model gets a striking Rs 10,000 price hike.
Meanwhile, there were no price changes in sight for the newly launched and practical Rizta. Currently, the Rizta is the most affordable model and will likely remain popular due to its practicality. However, Bajaj has decided to raise the Chetak lineup prices by up to Rs.12,000. The Chetak Urbane variant now costs Rs.8,000 more, and the Chetak Premium comes at Rs 12,000 more.
Among the manufacturers announcing price revisions, the TVS iQube, one of the best-selling models, was not exempt, the base variant now costs Rs. 3,000 more, while its flagship variant, the iQube S, underwent a Rs. 6,000 price increase. Hero's EV division, Vida, also increased the prices of its two models, tacking on Rs. 5,000 to the V1 Plus model and Rs. 4,000 to the V1 Pro model.
Interestingly, Ola has not yet announced any price hikes for its electric scooters. It is speculated that the current prices will remain until April 15. As there are plans for the company to go public in the upcoming months, this could be a strategic move to maintain their current customer base. While nothing is confirmed, one thing is sure: Ola plans to announce both the Ola S1X delivery timeline and its new price on April 15, 2024, as confirmed by the Ola CEO.
In conclusion, the EV industry in India is experiencing considerable changes in pricing. All top electric two-wheelers manufacturers, excluding Ola, have increased their prices as a direct effect of the new EMPS scheme implemented by the Government of India and the removal of the FAME subsidy, substantially impacting the industry.
