As the name suggests, the Maruti Brezza CBG leverages compressed biogas as its primary fuel source. Chemically identical to Compressed Natural Gas (CNG), CBG does not necessitate extensive modifications to vehicles already equipped to handle CNG operations.
The internal machinery of the Maruti Brezza CBG utilises a sophisticated K-series dual jet, dual VVT petrol engine. When fuelled with petrol, the output reaches a maximum power and peak torque of 103.1 PS and 136.8 Nm, respectively. The car comes with 5-speed manual transmission and 6-speed automatic transmission options. When running on CNG, the power and torque decrease a bit, producing 87.8 PS and 121.5 Nm, respectively, and only offering the 5-speed manual transmission. The rated mileage for the Brezza CNG is 25.51 km per kilogram.
Considering the CBG's calorific value and chemical properties, similar to that of CNG with a methane content of over 90%, it's expected that the Brezza CBG will produce performance numbers akin to its CNG counterpart. The CBG version of Brezza is anticipated to continue delivering an equivalent level of performance as the CNG alternative. Maruti Suzuki is likely to introduce CBG options on the Brezza LXI, VXi, and ZXi models, which already come with a CNG offering.
The newly unveiled Brezza CBGs exhibited at the Bharat Mobility Expo bear no significant alterations to their exterior design. Other than the new fuel stickers on the sides, everything remains the same. The feature list replicates that of the Maruti CNG variant with some modifications to accommodate the CNG drivetrain.
Enhancements made to accommodate the CNG powertrain will remain in effect in the CBG variant, which include a smart injection system for optimal combustion, a re-tuned suspension to bear the gas tank's weight, and the use of advanced components designed to extend the vehicle's overall durability and lifespan.
In terms of reducing India's CNG import bill, CBG presents a compelling case. As a green, renewable fuel derived from a variety of waste materials including cattle dung, agricultural waste, sewage treatment plant waste, and even municipal solid waste, CBG can significantly offset the demand for CNG. Aside from the automotive industry, industrial and commercial sectors also stand to benefit from the alternative fuel, reinforcing the vast potential of compressed biogas in India.
To conclude, while electric drivetrains may be stealing the limelight, the introduction of Maruti's first CBG vehicle underlines the continued exploration of viable, greener, and cost-effective fuel solutions in India's automotive industry.
