Maruti Suzuki Gears Up To Expand SUV Portfolio

Maruti Suzuki Gears Up To Expand SUV Portfolio

Maruti Suzuki, holding over 20% of the utility vehicle market, will launch a three-row SUV (Y17) with a hybrid engine by 2025 and an entry-level SUV

Despite having only four SUV models in a market saturated with 55 offerings, Maruti Suzuki currently enjoys over 20 percent of the utility vehicle share. In the next couple of years, the automaker will be shaking up the market with the introduction of a three-row SUV (also known as the Y17), which takes its inspiration from the Grand Vitara line and is equipped with a powerful hybrid engine. This vehicle is expected to come from the brand's forthcoming Kharkhoda plant in 2025 and is projected to be priced between Rs 15 lakh-25 lakh. Additionally, an entry-level SUV, also known as Y43, is in the process of being developed and is expected to be introduced in the market around 2026-2027. Maruti Suzuki's MD and CEO, Hisashi Takeuchi, recently revealed that the company has identified certain areas that call for improvements in their SUV offerings, and have plans to address these deficits. "We will try to fill those gaps,” he went on to say. To rival crowd-pleasers like the Hyundai Exter and Tata Punch compact SUVs, Maruti Suzuki will adopt a new strategy to have a full-fledged SUV, at the heart of which are high-riding hatchbacks like S-Presso and Ignis, sporting SUV-style aesthetics. Given the meteoric rise of the sub-4m SUV market, crossing the million-unit mark back in 2023 and propelling the overall utility vehicle market to just over 2 million units, the timing couldn't be more perfect. Maruti Suzuki, which over the past two years launched four SUVs, holds a modest share in this segment that features over 50 models. The company's commitment to its core values will ensure it tailors offerings to keep up with popular demand. If the predicted production volume is accurate and mirrors the market demand, the two planned SUVs are likely to generate an additional sale of 2,50,000 units a year. It is pertinent to note that due to the robust demand for its new range of SUVs, including the Fronx, Jimny, and Grand Vitara, Maruti Suzuki's SUV market share doubled to over 20 percent in the fiscal year to date. The additional SUVs will be instrumental for Maruti Suzuki in achieving its target of 50 percent market share in the passenger vehicle market. Conversely, rivals are not resting on their laurels and are expected to mount serious competition in the coming two years, making this a challenging task. Moreover, in 2023, the SUV segment contributed to 48 percent of the total passenger vehicle sales with an estimated 2 million units sold. Amid a general decline in hatchbacks and sedans, the SUV segment was the fastest-growing last year, expanding by over 25 percent. This robust growth is expected to increase the share of SUVs in the passenger vehicle market beyond 50 percent in 2024, a considerable leap from the 43 percent share it had in 2022. Maruti also has plans to make its debut in the EV SUV market with a model based on the eVX in late 2024.

Bajaj Auto Secures Rs 5431 Cr Loan to Support KTM AG Restructuring Ahead of May 23 Deadline

Bajaj Auto backs KTM AG with a ₹5,431 crore loan via its Dutch arm, aiding urgent restructuring to avoid liquidation before May 23, 2025.

Bajaj Auto has secured a €566 million (approximately ₹5,431 crore) unsecured loan through its Netherlands-based subsidiary, Bajaj Auto International Holdings BV, to support the restructuring of Austrian motorcycle manufacturer KTM AG. This financial move comes ahead of KTM's critical May 23, 2025, deadline to deposit €548 million with its creditors, a requisite step to avoid liquidation. Background on KTM's Financial Challenges Bajaj_Auto_backs_KTM_AG_01 KTM AG filed for bankruptcy in November 2024, citing an inability to service debts accrued from the acquisition of MV Agusta and substantial investments in its MotoGP operations. These financial strains were exacerbated by a significant downturn in two-wheeler demand in Europe, leading to inflated inventories and operational challenges. Bajaj Auto's Continued Support Bajaj_Auto_backs_KTM_AG_01 Since KTM's bankruptcy filing, Bajaj Auto has demonstrated ongoing support through multiple financial infusions totaling €200 million to date. These contributions have been instrumental in resuming production at KTM's Mattighofen plant and in meeting the conditions set forth in the restructuring plan, approved by creditors in February 2025. However, production at the plant stopped again on April 28, 2025, due to supply issues stemming from concerns over KTM AG's ability to pay suppliers. Bajaj-KTM Ownership Structure Bajaj_Auto_backs_KTM_AG_01 Bajaj Auto holds a 49.9% stake in Pierer Bajaj AG, a joint venture with Austrian entrepreneur Stefan Pierer, which in turn owns a majority stake in Pierer Mobility AG, the parent company of KTM AG. This layered ownership structure positions Bajaj Auto as a significant stakeholder in KTM's operations and strategic decisions. Market Response Following the announcement of the loan, Bajaj Auto's shares rose by over 1%, reflecting investor confidence in the company's strategic support for its European affiliate. Analysts view this move as a decisive step to stabilize KTM AG's financial position and safeguard Bajaj Auto's investment.
