The reimagined Tata Punch, a sub-compact SUV, has been spotted for the first time amid unprecedented testing sessions. Although shrouded in camouflage, the revamping process is already evident. The launch date is yet to be announced, however, Tata plans to unveil the new model by the middle of 2025. More striking is the fact that the makeover draws significant cues from the Punch EV, launched earlier this year.
It is apparent from the spied testing that the renewed Tata Punch will reap much of its exterior and interior design from the previously launched, successful Punch EV while maintaining its own unique features. Despite the disguise, the frontage unmistakably savors of the Punch EV. The resemblance includes an identical hood line, a similar bifurcated headlight configuration, and a corresponding bumper design. This alignment enhances its role in the family lineage alongside larger siblings like the Nexon, Harrier, and Safari.
While the renewed Tata Punch mirrors aspects of the Punch EV, it will have distinguishing markers. It will not feature the full-width LED light bar up front, typically associated with the EV. There may be new details introduced on the bumper. The alloy wheels will also sport a fresh design. Nonetheless, the profile and rear end are expected to maintain their existing look.
The inside of the revamped Punch will likely incorporate updates borrowed from the Punch EV. Notwithstanding these similarities, Tata Motors has made it clear that the two models will have distinct feature lists, much like the Nexon twins. Included in these unique features are the larger touchscreen, an Arcade.ev app suite, an electronic parking brake, all-wheel disc brakes, a welcome animation, goodbye animation by the front LED DRLs, and OTA updates. It is therefore expected that the Punch EV will remain the better-equipped model.
In terms of mechanical structure, the Punch is expected to stay identical to its existing model. It will continue to be propelled by a 1.2-litre, three-cylinder, naturally aspirated petrol engine that yields 86hp and 113Nm of torque. This engine is paired with a 5-speed manual or AMT gearbox. The Punch will also remain available in its CNG version, maintaining its 73.4hp and 103Nm performance rates. The CNG model is only paired with a 5-speed manual gearbox currently, but we might see an AMT soon added to the mix, possibly even before the facelift.
The Tata Punch redefined the subcompact SUV segment in India with its 2021 launch. Since then, competitors like the Hyundai Exter and the Citroen C3 have also debuted in this rapidly growing space.
