Zagato, one of the most respected car modification companies, renowned for their ingenuity and craftsmanship, have outdone themselves. The reputable Italian coachbuilder, known for their tailor-made bespoke vehicles, have created something truly incredible - the AGTZ Twin Tail. And impressively, this isn't just some fancy concept; it's a limited edition model that car enthusiasts can actually purchase. Their muse for this project was the Alpine A110. However, this isn't an ordinary vehicle modification. Zagato, in collaboration with the renowned Polish dealer La Squadra, has produced a vehicle with two completely different personalities - depending on the preference of the owner. Their ingenious approach allows the Twin Tail owner to alternate between the streamlined elegance of a long tail and the masculine, sporty character of a short tail. This unique feature, facilitated by a detachable rear section, effectively provides the owner with two distinct cars – a nimble, 4,305mm-long sports vehicle and a 4,802mm-long example of automotive artistry - all wrapped in one masterpiece. Zagato’s homage to the '60s Le Mans' cars is unmistakable with the Twin Tail. The Alpine A220, the peak example of sporting prototypes that started with a super-efficient 1.0-litre inline-four engine and several modifications later, fitting a Renault built V8, serves as their inspiration. Although it didn't have a sterling racing record – with only one out of four A220s finishing at the Le Mans in 1968, the vehicle was an aesthetic marvel. Its aerodynamically sophisticated look was further enhanced when engineers removed 30cm from the rear end of one car. The subsequent success of this revised model in shorter races didn’t elude Zagato's attention. According to Andrea Zagato, the company CEO, they strived to recapture the spirit and design flair of the A220 short-tail in the AGTZ Twin Tail, rather than simply making a racing car. Zagato acknowledges the substantial evolution of technology, aerodynamics, and power since the '60s, and their design reflects this. "With the AGTZ Twin Tail, we are producing a car we believe is consistent with our heritage," he explained. While the provocative design approach of Zagato may raise eyebrows, the company has a serious intention of selling this bespoke car through La Squadra’s high-end operations. The beautifully crafted car harbours echoes of the A220's aerodynamic integrity, while providing a hint of the robust A220 short-tail's influence. The physical transformation process for the owner is unclear, but undoubtedly it will add to the car’s mystique and allure. As you would expect from Zagato, the car’s exterior has been reimagined using carbon fibre. The company will supply a custom-made stand for the detachable rear section – presumably so owners can admire it while it's not in use. In terms of price, the AGTZ Twin Tail doesn't come cheap. A model will set prospective buyers back by an impressive 650,000 euros (or around £555,000), plus taxes. Just 19 examples are set to be produced, and Zagato claims their ‘order book is filling fast’. With such aesthetic appeal, coupled with the history and status of the Zagato brand, it's obvious that the AGTZ Twin Tail is not just another car. Instead, it's a testament to innovative design, customisation, and meticulous craftsmanship.
