Volkswagen has unveiled an impressive one-of-a-kind model, the 2024 Volkswagen Virtus Convertible, though the vehicle isn't commercially available for sale. However, specialist car customisation outfits can create similar designs, allowing enthusiasts to experience something equivalent. The brainchild of a special visit by Brazil's President Lula da Silva to the Volkswagen São Bernardo do Campo plant, the Virtus Cabrio was developed to make the occasion truly remarkable. Requiring an original and thrilling element, the Virtus Cabrio emerged as a visually outstanding prototype that appears to offer practical use as well. Creating the Virtus Convertible wasn't a simple task of removing the roof - a frequent method employed by car modifiers. The team conducted extensive modifications to the Virtus sedan, intending to provide a comfortable arrangement for both sitting and standing passengers. The vehicle had to be fully operational as it served as the official transport for a comprehensive tour around the plant. With a tight six-week timeline and the nature of the project making it hugely challenging, the Virtus Cabrio involved as many as 30 professionals. Because the vehicle's B and C pillars had to be completely removed along with the sedan's roof, additional strengthened structures were integrated to provide rigidity. A comprehensive remodelling included enlarging the second row to ensure guests could comfortably switch between sitting and standing stances. This necessitated the need to extend the floor length, which subsequently required a redesign of the fuel tank. The regular rear seats were substituted with specially made units to meet the project's requirements, and a transverse bar was installed to aid guests while standing. The Virtus Convertible's colour palette and final touches are equally impressive. Painted in Biscay Blue as a tribute to the Brazilian flag's blue disc, the vehicle features 18-inch dual-tone alloy wheels and a black interior theme. Design alterations were also introduced to the dashboard and door inserts. Several finishing parts had to be freshly developed because of the roof and pillars' removal. Additionally, the mechanism for opening and closing the doors, fuel tank, and seats was upgraded. The Virtus Cabrio also saw changes to a few of the sedan’s electronic management systems. The Virtus Cabrio is equipped with a 1.4-litre TSI petrol engine that provides 150 PS maximum power and 250 Nm peak torque, coupled with a six-speed automatic gearbox. This is different from the Indian Virtus offering, which includes a 1.0-litre TSI petrol engine generating 115 PS and a 1.5-litre TSI EVO producing 150 PS, with six-speed manual or automatic transmission for the former and seven-speed DGS for the latter.
