Ford is anticipated to re-enter the Indian market as soon as 2025, with plans to sell completely built-up (CBU) units of the next-generation Endeavour and Mustang Mach-E.
Ford is anticipated to mark its return to the Indian market as soon as 2025, potentially offering consumers the CBU units of its forthcoming Endeavour and Mustang Mach-E models. This speculation arose after Ford had previously submitted a design patent for its recently released Endeavour in India.
Before the sudden halt in negotiations to sell its Chennai plant to the JSW Group, there was already speculation about Ford's potential re-entry into the India market. Fueling these assumptions, the leading American car manufacturer has reportedly been actively recruiting for various positions.
Previously, Ford took advantage of its extensive production facilities in Maraimalai Nagar, dependent on Indian domestic sales and export. However, local sales fell short of the projected figures, leading to Ford's surprising departure from local sales in late 2021. Tata Motors took over Ford's Sanand plant via a subsidiary in early 2023.
Ford is rumored to make its return by initially offering its next-gen Endeavour CBU units in 2025, possibly transitioning to local production shortly afterward. The Mustang Mach-E, also known to be trademarked in India, is expected to join the lineup. Ford's exit triggered speculations that fully imported models like the Mustang Mach-E might be introduced to the market.
Although these plans have yet to be realized, the trademark application strongly suggests Ford's intentions to re-establish its presence in India. Mustang Mach-E could be brought into the country through the CBU channel, taking advantage of the relaxation in homologation. The vehicle is being sold globally with either a 72 kWh or 91 kWh battery pack, with options for rear-wheel or all-wheel drive.
The entry-level Mach-E can generate 269 hp and 430 Nm, while the larger battery pack variant can reach 294 hp and 530 Nm. A single charge can reportedly yield a driving range of up to 600 km. Although the specific variants to be made available on the Indian market are uncertain, the top-spec GT AWD model, with a massive 487 hp and 850 Nm and a proclaimed range of 489 km, is considered a highly probable possibility.
The Ford Mustang Mach-E is expected to rival the likes of the Audi Q8 e-tron and Mercedes EQE, with estimated pricing in the region of Rs. 1 crore upwards.
