New and Improved Audi S3 to Feature Added Horsepower and Advanced RS3 Technology
Renovations made to a Volkswagen Golf typically lead to overhauling other vehicles under the umbrella of the Volkswagen Group that share its foundation. Following the confirmed arrival of the Mk8.5 Golf R, we have started seeing key updates to the Audi S3.
Unveiled in 2020, the fourth-generation S3 is an agile, high-end vehicle, though until now, it has lacked the thrilling performance that sets leading hot hatches apart. Audi appears to have addressed this shortcoming in its latest upgrade.
The core features of the vehicle retain their original design: an EA888 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine from the VW Group, a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, and a four-wheel drive. However, the engine has been modified in order to achieve a horsepower of 328bhp and a torque of 310lb ft. These are notable increases from the previous 305 horsepower and 295 torque, and they curiously match the discontinued Golf R 20 Years model perfectly. This leads to speculation that these adjustments may be carried over to the updated R model.
With the enhanced engine, the vehicle's 0-62 time is reduced by one-tenth of a second to 4.7 seconds, while the top speed remains capped at an electronic limit of 155mph. Now, under lighter load, the vehicle's turbocharger operates at a steady RPM to minimize lag upon acceleration. According to Audi, the transmission's shift times are halved when the engine is running at full capacity.
Significant modifications have been made to the chassis. The S3 now includes the RS3's torque splitter system, which adjusts the torque arrangement amidst the axles and moves it between the rear wheels while navigating corners.
The vehicle also features a new Dynamic Plus driving mode, which concentrates maximum power into the rear axle, causing the car to occasionally oversteer. In Dynamic Plus mode, the engine idles at 1300 RPM for brisker, stronger startups. An updated stability control system progressively decreases its control over the vehicle through the drive settings.
The front axle has also undergone changes, significantly increasing the negative camber for a more aggressive drive. Dynamic steering now comes standard with the S3, along with an angle-dependent ratio, and Audi indicates that the steering characteristics have been enhanced for improved feel and feedback.
The brakes and tires also have been modified, featuring 357x34mm steel brake discs, twin-piston calipers in the front, and an optional sporty Falken tire described as "especially sporty" by Audi.
The modifications appear to make the S3 a more enticing choice to the driver community. We know from these pictures that it will continue to be available as a sedan and a five-door Sportback, albeit we cannot specify exactly what it will look like. A significant departure from the pre-facelift model is unlikely.
A full unveiling complete with UK pricing is expected soon. The last remaining question is whether the five-cylinder RS3 will be revived. The big brother of the S3 was discreetly removed from the UK market at the start of the previous year to meet demand, and there has been no word on its return. We certainly hope for its restoration, but if not, the new S3 could serve as an adequate replacement.
