The Nexon EV variants, including Fearless LR, Fearless + LR, and Fearless + S LR, have received the most significant price reduction of Rs. 1.2 lakh each (excluding taxes)
Tata Motors, a global automobile manufacturing giant, has announced a significant reduction in the retail prices of its best-selling electric vehicles (EVs) Nexon and Tiago in the Indian market, as a strategy to make them more affordable to the average consumer. The company, under its subsidiary, Tata Passenger Electric Mobility Ltd (TPEM), aims to stimulate sales and promote the adoption of electric vehicles in India with this step.
The revised prices are only applicable to new buyers and provide no benefits to the existing owners. The company has revealed that it will cut the prices of Nexon EV by up to Rs. 1.2 lakh, thereby making the vehicle more attractive for potential customers. Similarly, up to Rs. 70,000 will be deducted from the price of Tiago EV, with its base model starting at an alluring price of Rs. 7.99 lakh.
The decision follows the price reduction moves taken by other car manufacturers including Mahindra and MG Motor for their respective EV models. The rationale behind this strategic move is the decrease in battery cell prices, as stated by Mr. Vivek Srivatsa, Chief Commercial Officer at TPEM. He explained that the company has decided to pass on the cost-benefit directly to the customers.
The move to reduce the prices is aimed at driving the growth of the EV market in India, where TPEM holds over 70% market share. Interestingly, the newly launched Punch EV will not see any price changes as its initial price already reflects the expected reduction in battery prices.
The electric vehicle market has shown strong growth, outperforming the overall passenger vehicle industry. This trend continued into 2024, with EV sales registering a 100% year-on-year growth in January 2024. Mr. Srivatsa reiterated TPEM's mission of making EVs more accessible by providing a wide range of body styles, range, and price points.
The significant price cuts by Tata Motors are expected to draw more customers into the EV market, especially towards Nexon EV and Tiago EV. In contrast, electric vehicle sales in Germany have noticeably slowed down, attributable to the government's termination of tax incentives for buying electric vehicles.
The sales of new electric vehicles in Germany declined by 54.9% compared to December 2023, while sales of plug-in hybrids were down by 19.6% in the initial month of 2024. However, the sale of vehicles powered by internal combustion engines saw a rise. The overall automotive market contracted by 11.7% compared to December 2023, shedding light on the various challenges in the sector.
