The Qargos electric cargo scooter aims to enhance operational efficiency by eliminating the need for delivery executives to carry bulky backpacks
.
The world's first electric cargo two-wheeler, developed by Qargos, has been spotted during testing stages. This innovation aims to streamline operation efficiency and eliminate the necessity for delivery personnel to carry bulky backpacks. Traditional two-wheelers, although commonly utilised in B2B and B2C services, have restricted cargo capacity and lack protection against weather elements. Qargos attempts to solve these restraints with their pioneering cargo two-wheeler scooter.
Being developed by Qargos, a Pune-based start-up, the electric cargo scooter features cutting-edge technology. Having been in production for the past six years, it's now in the final stages of development. The electric vehicle (EV) uses a 6.1 kWh lithium-ion battery pack which is the creation of French multinational Dassault Systemes. This battery powers a 3.4 kW motor, generating a peak power of 6 kW.
Boasting an impressive range of 150 kilometers, the top speed is capped at 80 km/h for safety. Even with a weighing scale tipping at 145 kg, the cargo scooter can carry approximately 120 kg of cargo in its 225-litre cargo compartment. Currently, charging using a standard AC power socket takes around 5 hours 15 minutes. There are plans to enhance it with direct current charging capability, reducing the charging time to approximately three hours.
Testing of this EV is ongoing with modifications being made as necessary. The company is prioritizing enhancing the vehicle’s aerodynamics, in conjunction with Dassault Systemes, to increase the range further.
On a conventional two-wheeler, an estimated 35 deliveries are feasible. But with Qargos’ electric cargo scooter, one could make up to 70 deliveries, thanks to the larger cargo capacity of 120 kg. The vehicle also allows for a 3X increase in grocery carrying potential compared to a standard two-wheeler. This novel scooter relieves the delivery personnel of heavy backpacks, simplifying package retrieval, and increasing operational efficiency. Additionally, the lockable cargo compartment offers much-needed security and protection from weather elements for the parcels.
Qargos is rapidly approaching the final stages of testing and validation process, with homologation expected to occur by March or April. Bookings may commence in the subsequent months. The anticipated starting price for this scooter will be Rs 2 lakh, with a production goal of 250 units by the end of the year. As demand surges, production could scale up to an estimated 12,000 units by 2025, all produced at Qargos' Pune facility.
So far, the project has attracted an investment of USD 1 million. As the model moves into production, more funds will be required for manufacturing and marketing purposes. In partnership with top-tier suppliers, the prototypes were developed, and Ather has lent its expertise in developing the charging systems. Qargos is also preparing a two-seater version with a reduced cargo compartment.
