Honda's Innovation The 2025 CR-V Hydrogen with Bidirectional Charging for Off-Grid Living

Honda's Innovation The 2025 CR-V Hydrogen with Bidirectional Charging for Off-Grid Living

This facility has been specifically crafted for the production of low-volume specialty models, including the Acura NSX and various developmental race cars

Honda is set to join the ranks of automotive manufacturers such as Toyota and BMW who firmly believe in the potential of hydrogen in the auto industry. It has teamed up with General Motors to create a latest generation fuel-cell system that will be incorporated into a future fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV) based on the CR-V model. Unlike the earlier Clarity sedan model, which was phased out in 2021, this forthcoming crossover - expected to roll out this year - will feature a unique design that marries a fuel cell with a battery pack.

A new teaser video demonstrates the advantages of bidirectional charging. It shows an individual at a remote location using the battery pack to power his coffee machine. He is later seen at a hydrogen filling station replenishing the two rear-mounted hydrogen tanks. Honda's CR-V Hydrogen 2025 model under preview incorporates the ability of bidirectional charging, making it comparable to several battery-run EVs presently on the market. Notable examples include the Nissan Leaf, Ford F-150 Lightning, Hyundai Ioniq 5, Kia EV6, Genesis GV60, and certain ID. series models by Volkswagen. Mitsubishi's Outlander PHEV also sports this capability.

The integration of a battery pack is envisioned to alleviate concerns over range, given the inadequate hydrogen fueling infrastructure. Specific details about the CR-V FCEV are yet to be unveiled by Honda. However, it is known that the vehicle will be produced at the Ohio-based Performance Manufacturing Center (PMC) site, where the now-discontinued Acura NSX was manufactured until November 2022. The PMC site will also export the JDM-spec version.

The release of Honda's teaser video followed shortly after Shell's revelation of its intent to permanently shut down all seven hydrogen stations in California. The news is of special interest as Honda's previous Clarity Fuel Cell was only available for lease in California.

The highlighted prototype model showcased in the video features a unique blue wrap and bears mandatory orange side markers, indicating that it is likely the US version. Distinguishing characteristics from a regular CR-V include clear taillights and a charging port on the driver's side front fender, catering to the battery recharging needs or for powering home appliances and other devices. Honda has not yet clarified whether it will retain the CR-V name for the new model.

Honda claims the fuel cell system will cost two-thirds less to create and will boast double the durability. Upon its launch late this year, the CR-V FCEV is poised to be the sole fuel-cell electric passenger car manufactured in America.

However, competition in this specialized segment remains thin, with meager offerings as of 2024. Toyota offers the Japan-manufactured Mirai, albeit with less than stellar success, while Hyundai has assured the release of the next iteration of its Korea-made Nexo by 2025.
